My Top Three H.P. Lovecraft Stories

One of the topics that came up this week at my weekly dinner with friends was 'What are your top three H.P. Lovecraft stories?' It was interesting to see who picked what. Here were my three.

The Dunwich Horror

The Shadow Over Innsmouth

The Call of Cthulhu

What are yours?

I've always liked the longer Lovecraft stories like MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS, THE CASE OF CHARLES DEXTER WARD, and THE WHISPERER IN THE DARKNESS. He really has a chance to develop character and atmosphere in the longer work.

But I like just about all his Mythos fiction.

I think I'd agree with your list, though the three Walker cited certainly deserve honorable mention.

Case of Charles Dexter Ward, the Dunwich Horror and the third would be a tie. Fritz Leiber complained when the Arkham House Dunwich Horror first came out that the Festival wasn't in it. I was startled when I discovered that but I've come to agree with him.The other would be The Call of Cthulhu even though it shows so well everything I dislike about him.
